Grungy Olivia sheds all her Vanity Flair in gritty drugs war role

- From Caroline Graham IN LOS ANGELES

SHE made her name as the alluring Becky Sharp in ITV period drama Vanity Fair.

But actress Olivia Cooke could not have appeared more different last week as she sported a fake baby bump and unkempt look while filming the gritty £10 million film Brother’s Blood in New York.

The 28-year-old, who stars opposite Oscar winner Hilary Swank, plays a pregnant unwed mother fighting against the heroin trade.

A source said: ‘Olivia’s about as far away from Becky Sharp as she can be in this new role. Her wardrobe is very grungy and gets even worse as the drugs escalate.

‘Everyone has been raving about how good she is. Hilary Swank has two Oscars but Olivia is more than holding her own on set.’

In the film, Cooke plays a woman whose boyfriend is shot dead in a drug-related crime in upstate New York. She teams up with the man’s mother, played by Ms Swank, 47, to track down his killer. Ms Cooke is considered to be one of Hollywood’s new stars thanks to roles in movies such as Ready Player One and TV show Bates Motel.

She is set to become a household name as Alicent Hightower in the upcoming Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon.

On social media, the actress hinted that her latest project has been years in the making. Posting a photograph of Brother’s Blood director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, she wrote: ‘Only taken us six years, Miles. Let’s gooooooo…’

The Oldham-born star also showed she has not left her British roots behind by taking a photograph of two bumper packets of PG Tips she brought to the set.
