Q I’m looking for a fastgrowing tree to put in a container on my south-facing patio to provide shade.

What do you suggest?

Sue Underwood

Many trees will thrive in

A

pots in sun. A multistemmed Himalayan birch tree will provide elegance with its gleaming white stems and graceful branches, while a venerable olive tree will add some Mediterranean flare.

Another option is to try a clump-forming bamboo. Among the best is Fargesia rufa, which grows to about 8ft in height and has slender canes and lush green foliage. When potting any of the plants mentioned above, use loam-based compost.

Q My juniper tree appears to have shrunk and gone brown. I planted it in a pot two years ago and water it regularly.

Janis Mildwater

A There are several reasons why junipers might turn brown, but I think the clue is in your question. These conifers are fairly drought-tolerant, and I suspect its downwards spiral is due to overwatering. Try holding back from watering, and keep your fingers crossed.

Q Can you suggest a few mail-order nurseries that specialise in rhododendrons? Anne Barry

A Among the best are Glendoick (glendoick. com), Loder Plants (loder. co.uk) and Millais Nurseries (rhododendrons.co.uk).
