RUGBY LEAGUE: Hull FC are M counting the cost of their 36-8 defeat to Catalans in Perpignan after a potentiall­y serious injury to centre Carlos Tuimavave.

Coach Brett Hodgson said: ‘Carlos had to come off with a potential achilles, we don’t know yet.’ Hodgson admitted it would be a hammer blow after losing full-back Jake Connor for 10 weeks to a knee injury but stressed: ‘We’re not at panic stations.

‘We’ve had two performanc­es that weren’t ideal but we’ll roll our sleeves up and go back at it.’

The win, secured in 35-degree heat, moved the Dragons into second position and marked a return for Samisoni Langi. Catalans’ Ben Garcia spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for holding dowm but his side led 20-0 at the break nonetheles­s.

M CRICKET: Southern Vipers won their first Charlotte Edwards Cup with a crushing six-wicket win over Central Sparks in the final in Northampto­n.

Maia Bouchier top-scored with 32 before Ella McCaughan (30) and Charlie Dean (7) helped their side reach the 110-run target with 25 balls to spare.

All-rounder Dean shone with the ball, taking two for 19 and was named Player of the Match.

The win gave Vipers head coach Edwards victory in the competitio­n named in her honour.

Dean said: ‘We’re really buzzing. We really wanted to take the Charlotte Edwards trophy home and we’ve done that.

‘I bowled alright throughout the competitio­n and I’ve backed that up today.’

M TRIATHLON: Jonny Brownlee and Alex Yee both crashed out of the cycling event at the World Triathlon Championsh­ip Series in Leeds.

New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde, who went on to win, said: ‘It’s a bitterswee­t victory. As it’s my first win I’m pretty stoked, but I was part of that collision.’

The 24-year-old added: ‘I know Jonny was pretty mad. He gave me some words, but that’s fair enough. I’m gutted for those guys. It’s totally my fault. I’m more than happy to own up to that.’

In the women’s race, Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown and Sophie Coldwell secured second and third places respective­ly. An impressive run from France’s Cassandre Beaugrand enabled her to take victory.
