5 BRITONS TO WATCH

-

Triple Olympic champion ADAM PEATY has declared himself fit for Birmingham despite breaking his foot during training in May. Peaty, who was unable to swim for six weeks, reckons his lack of preparation makes him effectively ‘blindfolded’ but only the foolish would bet against the superhuman Englishman. He has entered the 50metres and 100m breaststroke, as well as two relay races.

Swimming: Sandwell Aquatics Centre, starts Friday July 29

JAKE WIGHTMAN, the new 1500m world champion, said he was hoping to replicate his gold medal-winning performance in Oregon at the Alexander Stadium. The new star of British athletics — who represents Scotland, having grown up in Edinburgh — will be up against the strong Kenyan pair of Abel Kipsang and Timothy Cheruiyot. Wightman’s father Geoff, who memorably commentated in Eugene, will be calling this race too.

Athletics: Alexander Stadium, Thursday August 4

ALEX YEE emerged as the successor to the Brownlee brothers by winning silver at the Tokyo Olympics last year and gold in the mixed relay. He will be hoping to go one better in the individual event while England are favourites to win the latter event. Jonny Brownlee, last year’s Olympic champion, postponed his retirement to compete in it. Individual triathlon: Sutton Park, Friday July 29. Mixed relay: Sunday July 31

Olympic champion MATTY LEE is missing his celebrity diving partner Tom Daley — who is on a break from the sport — but his form is good. The Yorkshireman won silver with Noah Williams at last month’s World Championships in Budapest, despite it being their first international competition together. They will hope to go one better in the 10m synchronised event.

Diving: Sandwell Aquatics Centre, Friday August 5

Gymnast ALICE KINSELLA will be defending her beam title in front of what promises to be a raucous hometown crowd in Birmingham. The 20-year-old, who also claimed bronze in the individual all-round and helped Team England land silver four years ago, is the daughter of former Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland footballer Mark Kinsella. She is joined in the England squad by four-time Commonwealth champion Claudia Fragapane. Gymnastics: Arena Birmingham, Thursday August 4
