West Ham back Moyes to end club’s losing run

- By Kieran Gill

DAVID MOYES has the backing of West Ham’s board, who believe the 59-year-old Scot is the right man to lift the club after five straight Premier League defeats.

Friday night’s 2-0 loss to Brentford led to talk of Moyes losing his job but MailOnline reported yesterday that the owners had decided to give him more time.

Moyes is aware he is under pressure, with West Ham facing Leeds, Wolves and Everton — all in the bottom six — in their next three Premier League games.

The manager speaks to David Sullivan after every match and West Ham’s co-owner was at the London Stadium on Friday. These three upcoming games could define the club’s season and Sullivan and Co believe Moyes deserves the chance to steer them away from the relegation zone.

Moyes tried changing his selection and shape against Brentford to end their losing run. He replaced Tomas Soucek with Lucas Paqueta, who lined up alongside Declan Rice in midfield. Gianluca Scamacca started over Michail Antonio in attack after returning from an ankle injury.

Moyes also changed to a 3-4-2-1 formation, though his tweaks did not work as Brentford’s Ivan Toney scored one and assisted another to secure a 2-0 win. It is the first time since April 2017, under Slaven Bilic, that West Ham have lost five on the trot.

Moyes admitted he is under pressure after West Ham’s losing streak was extended. Fans booed the team at half-time and full time, while some supporters voiced their anger towards Moyes.

Moyes said: ‘I don’t think it’s unfair. In the business we’re in if you don’t win in five games you’re under pressure. I only want the best for West Ham. It’s been a great club for me and we’ve done well. I’m determined to keep us there and not get dragged down.’

West Ham spent close to £170million in the summer on players like Paqueta, who is set to remain in midfield next to Rice. Moyes felt that experiment worked, despite Friday’s game ending in defeat.
