Where can we go that’s fun for all the family?
Q My husband and I would like to take our children and grandchildren on holiday in the summer of 2025 for 10-14 days with a budget of £2,000 a head. We want an all-inclusive, somewhere hot by a beach. Two of our grandchildren are sporty and one is into history and culture. I will be aged 80 in 2025 and my husband 83. We are both still very active. Any tips?
Theresa Cunningham, via email
A Try Neilson, a specialist in active breaks for families in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. It says £2,000 a head, meals included, should be OK for 10 days. Its Baia dei Mori Beachclub in Budoni, Sardinia, and Alana in Paklenica, Croatia, are best value, though its Messini Beachclub in Analipsi, Greece, is close to the ancient Greek site of Messini for your history-loving grandchild (neilson.co.uk).
Q Next September, we are planning a trip to Australia. We would like to stop off somewhere, but not in Singapore or Thailand as it can be rainy then. Would going the other way – via Los Angeles or San Francisco – be all right?
Keith Hughes, Scarborough
A Yes. LA or San Francisco would be great – the weather is warm then (about 27C in LA and 21C in San Francisco) and there is no reason not to go in that direction round the globe. Try a travel agent such as Trailfinders or Dialaflight. Current fares to Sydney with a two-day stop in LA on Virgin and Delta flights cost from around £1,090 return with Trailfinders.
Q We are doing the India ‘Golden Triangle’ – between New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra – in February. How do you get a visa for India and an Electronic Travel Authorisation for Sri Lanka? Patrick Woodard, via email
A For India, head to indianvisa online.gov.in – e-visas cost from £20.50. For Sri Lanka, go to eta.gov.lk, which cost from £41.
Q My wife needs to take insulin and several tablets daily, which we receive in boxes. What do we need to do to prove they are legal when travelling? I know customs in the EU may ask for prescriptions, but they were given to the pharmacy. Any advice?
J. McNaughton, via email
A Your pharmacy should be able to provide a copy of prescriptions. See also ‘Can I take my medication abroad?’ at nhs.uk.
Q I am flying to St Lucia with BA and would like to upgrade to business for my return flight. What is the best way to do this? Pauline Heckford, via email
A You should book in advance on a popular route such as St Lucia, says BA. Cheap on-the-day upgrades tend not to be offered to and from the Caribbean. It’s worth downloading the BA app to check what is available.
Q I have to cancel our Ryanair flights from Stansted to Bremen, Germany, in January because my wife is due to have surgery. If we do not turn up, will we be charged extra?
Tony Berrington, Nottingham
A You will not – Ryanair has no such additional fees.
Q I booked a ten-day Tui trip at a half-board hotel in Lanzarote, leaving November 9, to celebrate my husband’s 80th birthday. But I have been told the hotel is no longer available unless on an all-inclusive basis, which is £1,300 more. Can you help?
Linda Cant, via email
A Tui apologises and will now honour the original booking. It hopes you enjoy your holiday and the birthday celebrations.
