God help us if war ever came to this country

-

I concur with Peter Hitchens’ clarion call to ‘end this brainless march to war’ in last week’s Mail on Sunday. It is estimated more than 300,000 soldiers on both sides of the Russia-Ukraine War have died to date. Those who call for a re-introduction of conscription would do well to heed the wise words of the late Harry Patch who said that war is ‘organised murder and nothing else’. After reading Mr Hitchens’ column, can we assume that his response to aggression is the white flag? J. S. Ramsey,

I do not understand all this talk of war with Russia, North Korea, Iran and China. Modern weapons are frightfully destructive – much worse than we have seen in Gaza. If war ever entered the UK, we would be saying goodbye to our major cities and all the historic buildings. God help us if the warmongers, who are stirring up all this trouble, get their way. Richard Bruce, Yarmouth

While I may often agree with Mr Hitchens’ views, I find his warmth for Russia and views on the Ukrainian War very short-sighted and naive. Sure we all hate war, and the horrible consequences and misery that it creates, but would he sooner be living under Putin’s regime where he would probably be imprisoned for his views? We and all other democratic countries should be giving our full support to halt this and other dictatorial countries’ advancements. Name and address supplied

There does seem to be a slow walk to a bigger conflict. The current world leaders are probably the worst in my living memory. Christopher Dixon, Derbyshire

The only beneficiaries from war are the owners of the gun factories. They don’t care who wins or loses, just as long as the war doesn’t stop. Joseph Mendoza, Durham

I couldn’t disagree with Peter Hitchens more. Russia started this war. Ukraine may not be perfect, but it was dreaming of better and Putin didn’t like that.

I am old enough to remember the Vietnam War and its twists and turns, and I could never understand why the Americans got involved. Serbia? What had it to do with us? Afghanistan? I was shouting at the TV when they announced that one. Had they never studied history? However, I can understand backing Ukraine as they have been invaded by Russia. If the Russians think they can roll through European countries in the future, we better try to assist now.
