Dragons fire away

- STEPHEN DAVIES

CATALANS DRAGONS ran in six tries to win a thrilling game at Warrington Wolves 32-24 and go level on points with St Helens at the Super League summit.

The French outfit made a whirlwind start with three converted tries in the opening 12 minutes from Tom Davies, Tom Johnstone and Ben Garcia to lead 18-0 lead.

Samoa prop Zane Musgrove scored his first try in England to get Warrington on the board, before Toby King touched down on his 200th career appearance to take the home team to within six points.

But Catalans increased their advantage to 28-12 early in the second half thanks to tries from Cesar Rouge and a second score from Johnstone.

Again Sam Burgess’s team refused to buckle with James Harrison and George Williams going over to make it a four-point game. But Jordan Abdull’s 79th-minute try made sure of the victory and ended Warrington’s four-match winning run. Abdull kicked four goals and ran the show with head coach McNamara saying: ‘He really stepped up today.

‘He put on a bit of a masterclass for us with his kicking and his game sense. We executed a plan early on in attack and Jordan was a big part of that.’

In yesterday’s other Super League fixture, Ryan Brierley marked his 300th appearance with two tries as hosts Salford defeated Leigh 32-22. Ethan Ryan (two) and Marc Sneyd also scored tries as seventh-placed Salford built up a 20-point lead early in the second half. Umyla Hanley followed up his Challenge Cup hat-trick against Championship side Featherstone last week with three more tries in defeat for Leigh.
