Discover the Highlands by boat and steam train …and meet Kirsty Wark

-

VISITORS from all over the world have, for centuries, flocked to the incredible hills, glens and lochs of the Scottish Highlands. And on this fabulous four-day break you’ll get a chance to see for yourself the stunning scenery of the region.

Travelling by steam train is a wonderful experience and there’s nowhere more atmospheric to do it than Scotland.

Here you’ll ride the Jacobite train – familiar to anyone who’s watched any of the Harry Potter films as the magical Hogwarts Express – as well as the world’s last ocean-going paddle steamer, the PS Waverley.

You’ll be joined for part of this trip by the broadcaster and proud Scotswoman Kirsty Wark, who will be on hand to chat with guests during an exclusive talk and Q&A.

Your 41-mile steam-hauled journey starts near Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis, passes its deepest freshwater loch, Loch Morar, and travels over the 21arch Glenfinnan Viaduct to arrive on the shores of the Atlantic next to Loch Nevis, the deepest seawater loch in Europe.

The itinerary also features three unique boat rides: one on The Falkirk Wheel; a trip on the picturesque Loch Katrine; and finally a voyage on the Firth of Clyde on board the PS Waverley.

You’ll be staying at The Buchanan Arms in the village of

Drymen, which has comfortable, elegant bedrooms – some with views of the scenic countryside.

And there will be plenty of opportunity to tuck into some fine Scottish grub between excursions, too, including fabulously fresh fish and chips.

REASONS TO BOOK

The unique Falkirk Wheel: The world’s only rotating boat lift will take you from the water at New Port Downie to the Union Canal 115ft (35 metres) above.

Ride the Jacobite: Frequently rated the world’s greatest scenic railway, Kirsty will join you as you puff past craggy coastlines and beautiful lochs on tracks which opened in 1901.

Stay in the Trossachs: This dramatic scenery inspired both romantic painter Turner and poet Wordsworth. You’ll get to stay in the centre of the national park at The Buchanan Arms, Drymen.

Meet Kirsty Wark: The broadcaster and journalist joins for part of the voyage to give a talk about her life and career. She’ll also be discussing modern Scottish history as you explore some of the nation’s finest engineering feats.

Scenic cruises: As well as the Falkirk Wheel, you’ll get to sail on the Firth of Clyde aboard the world’s last ocean-going paddle steamer, the historic and elegant PS Waverley, and enjoy the calm and picturesque Loch Katrine.
