Terriers on brink after dire draw

- By Ross Heppenstall AT JOHN SMITH’S STADIUM

A PITIFUL post-match lap of honour in front of a nearly empty stadium summed up Huddersfield’s dreadful season and the apathy which has greeted their demise.

A draw was not much help to struggling Birmingham either, who also remain in the relegation zone and will need an almighty performance against Norwich in their crunch home clash on Saturday.

You might have thought boss Andre Breitenreiter and his Town players would have vanished straight down the tunnel amid the shame of all but falling into League One — they now need a last day miracle to stay up.

Not so. They made a feeble attempt to parade around the pitch, but the majority had already left in disgust.

Breitenreiter, who took over from sacked Darren Moore in February and has managed just two wins from 12 games, said: ‘We’ve had so many problems in the last few weeks, months and maybe the whole year. Maybe it’s the right thing that we now go down.’

Huddersfield rallied in the second half and pushed hard for the winning goal they so desperately craved

to keep their slim survival hopes alive.

Birmingham led on the stroke of half-time when Koji Miyoshi fired home Keshi Anderson’s cross from the left.

But two minutes after the break, Jack Rudoni teed up Rhys Healey and he finished clinically.

Yet neither side could find a winner. From the away end came chants of ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt!’ towards Gary Rowett’s players, who now must win against Norwich and hope Plymouth do not take maximum points at home to Hull.

‘I understand it,’ Rowett said of the supporters’ chants. ‘The fans follow us in great numbers and at great expense.

‘Our away form has been incredibly poor all season.’
