VAR is costing us dear, blasts Iraola

- By Dominic Hogan

BOURNEMOUTH boss Andoni Iraola last night angrily hit out at what he sees as the inconsistencies of VAR as his team went down to defeat against Brentford.

The Bees claimed a dramatic 2-1 win, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa sinking the Cherries either side of Dominic Solanke’s strike.

Mbeumo scored his 50th goal for the club on 86 minutes before Solanke’s headed equaliser looked to have sealed an impressive 49th point for the Cherries.

But Wissa’s finish from close range left the hosts with nothing to show after a game that left Cherries manager Iraola ‘disappointed’ by VAR inconsistencies.

‘I was very angry with the referee and very disappointed,’ he said. ‘We scored two goals in the first half that should be allowed because they were legal. All the decisions since we are safe have gone against us.

‘Every week there is a moment, your club are losing points and losing games because they aren’t making correct decisions, and they are not consistent. Sometimes it’s clear and obvious but sometimes it’s not. I’m very disappointed.’

VAR scrubbed off a Solanke strike on 27 minutes after a handball from Antoine Semenyo in the build-up. Solanke also had a 37thminute strike disallowed, referee Matthew Donohue preventing a VAR review by calling a foul before the striker sent the ball into the bottom corner from range.

The referee also denied Ivan Toney a second-half penalty, and Iraola added: ‘For me [Toney] dives, but it’s the same as Havertz. If they think there is a small contact, then take the same decision as against Arsenal. For me it is difficult to understand.’

Thomas Frank, meanwhile, was impressed by Donohue, saying: ‘I think the referee did well, first Premier League game and I think he got the key decisions right.’
