It’s naive to wish for a Scottish election now

-

Many would welcome the principled Scottish Greens leaving government

It is hard to overstate the naivety of the comment of “Old John” from Ayrshire (Letters, Apr 22). It is this sort of wishful thinking that puts indy in peril, not an alliance between proindependence parties.

Has he seen the opinion polls? Just at the time Labour is ascendant he wants an election. Not only that but he wants the SNP to specifically tie it to indy. So that when the election is, inevitably, lost, the Unionists can crow that we’re really back in our box now. As to the other anti-Green voices here, it seems the British state’s traditional divide and rule policy is working nicely. And in Scotland, you can rely on the natives to do your work for you!

Michael Lloyd

Rubbish, Michael. Old John has identified an opportunity for Scotland. Labour in Scotland have not changed in the polls and are unlikely to change that at the ballot box. The SNP may have dropped in the polls but their drop coincides with a surge in don’t-knows. The SNP can win if they return to their prime objective – independence. Nothing else matters.

Keir Starmer says Labour are the ‘true party of English patriotism’

The England football team is NOT a proud national icon, not of my nation. Once again Starmer, who is meant to be a representative of the UK, shows his little England mindset.

I have no objection to him, as an Englishman, celebrating St George’s Day etc (how can I have?), but his conflation of English and UK is deeply offensive.

Jean Dunlop

As long as he equally celebrates the saints’ days of Scotland, Wales and Ireland one can’t really object to celebrating England’s as well. But is anyone going to hold their breath long enough to find out if he does? Not me!

The last refuge of a scoundrel. William Findlay

Well, that’s says it all about what they think about Scotland and Wales.

400+ English MP seats mean Scottish votes are irrelevant to ruling the UK. The route to power is through England. It’s a fact.

Wet wipes containing plastic set to be banned in Scotland

When my older children were babies or toddlers I carried a wet facecloth in a plastic bag. Perhaps it would do no harm to get back to some good habits of the 1950s/60s and early 70s. Audrey MacEachen
