Thousands march against the Union

-

THOUSANDS paraded through Glasgow’s city centre in support of independence in All Under One Banner’s latest march and rally.

Yessers gathered at Kelvingrove Park and made their way to Glasgow Green.

There were numerous calls made for a ceasefire in Gaza by those in attendance.

The rally’s speakers included SNP MP Alison Thewliss and Alba MP Kenny MacAskill.

Alba leader and former first minister Alex Salmond also joined the march.

Setting a focus on Grangemouth, MacAskill said: “Scotland’s massive energy wealth is keeping UK PLC afloat while one in three of our people are living in fuel poverty. This is the scandal of fuel-poor Scots in energy-rich Scotland.

“The tax receipts from North Sea oil continue to flow into the UK Treasury coffers to the tune of £9.4 billion over the last year alone, while much of the energy from Scotland’s offshore wind farms – enough to power Scotland’s homes 12 and a half times over – is literally being cabled south to keep the lights on for businesses and households south of the Border.

“This is the price of being run by a Tory government in Westminster which exploits our resources with Scotland having little to show for it in return.

“Only with independence will we be able to make our resources work for the people of Scotland and finally end the indignity of fuel poverty amidst energy plenty.”

Speaking to the Sunday National, Thewliss stressed the need to build on what is achieved at Yes events.

She said: “What’s important is those conversations you have with people sitting waiting for the bus, in a queue at the shop, whatever it is.

“You can have those conversations with people about why independence is so important and I would encourage everybody to think about those conversations they have with their friends and family, because we need to bring these folks to our cause and our movement.

“It is essential for the future of Scotland, for all of us, that we come together and do that in the best possible way that we can, in a civil and inclusive way.”
