New exhibition puts landscapes in unique focus
OPENING to the public tomorrow is a unique new exhibition featuring three of Scotland’s most creative and prolific landscape photographers.
That Other Landscape at the Smithy Gallery in Blanefield is a collaboration illustrating the landscape of Scotland and beyond, through each of the artists’ own distinct viewpoints.
Dylan Nardini, David Queenan and Grant Bulloch have all emerged into the arts scene with their own distinct styles and interpretations of both the intimate and wider landscapes of Scotland.
Heavily influenced by their own distinct localities, they have curated a unique perspective of Scotland’s scenery, albeit with brief forays into the north of England and even Iceland, all seen through their own individual observations.
Their work ranges from the iconic grand vistas of the mountain landscapes with snow-bound hills, unexpected ethereal light and clearing storms, to the detailed minutiae found in the outdoor environment – fallen leaves, lone trees, cherry blossom and even a spot of rust on the hull of a yacht. Vivid colours are juxtaposed with the muted tones of nature’s palette.
The artwork and images are nearly all hand printed by the artists themselves, using a variety of archival papers supplied by Fotospeed who have kindly supported the exhibition, ensuring the prints will last for decades to come without fading or deteriorating so the artwork will maintain their vibrant colours for a very long time.
Nardini’s love of the outdoors led him to become one of the most talented landscape photographers in the UK, and he won both the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Award and the British Photography Awards Landscape Category in 2021.
Bulloch has been commended in the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition twice, was a finalist in the British Photography Awards in 2022 and 2023, and has been shortlisted in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition every year from 2017 to 2022.
Queenan has amassed a huge portfolio of work over the years and collected a similar number of accolades, initially winning the Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year competition in 2015 and then more recently the 2023 Wex Photographer of the Year competition. Alongside these awards, he has been annually recognised in both the Scottish and UK Landscape Photographer of the Year competitions.
That Other Landscape is free to the public – opening tomorrow and running until June 1.
