Labour take council seat
SCOTTISH Labour have won a seat from the Conservatives in a council by-election.
Labour’s Mary Hume was elected to represent the Kilwinning ward on North Ayrshire Council in a vote held on Thursday.
It came after John Glover, who had represented the ward for the Scottish Conservatives since 2017, passed away in February.
The Tory candidate in the by-election to replace Glover, Chris Lawler, was pushed into third place and the SNP the constitutional procedures of the Spanish state.”
Devesa (above) added that Catalonia was – at the time of the referendum – and remains a part of the EU because it is a part of Spain, whereas Scotland was in the EU when the referendum took place in 2014, but as a result of Brexit this is no longer the case.
“The conditions have objectively changed for the Scottish people,” Devesa said.
“This is not exactly what they voted for. They voted for Scotland to remain in the UK, when the UK was also a member of the EU. Now, a fundamental part of the equation has changed.”
He added that he understood rejoining the EU was a “big issue for Scotland”
“I hope they would not delay [rejoining the EU] if independence is to come back,” Devesa said. candidate, Sheila Gibson, took second.
The Labour candidate won a landslide, with 2171 first preference votes compared to 916 for the SNP and 619 for the Tories.
The Scottish LibDems and the Scottish Family Party also ran and won 154 and 136 votes respectively.
Voter turnout was recorded as 30.2%.
The North Ayrshire Labour group celebrated on social media writing: “LABOUR GAIN in Kilwinning!”
