A DAY IN THE LIFE

- SCOTT DAVIES

Hotel manager Scott Davies shares more about Titanic Hotel’s commitment to sustainability and how that will become an even more important focus in the future…

How long have you been with Titanic and what attracted you to join the team?

I came here eight years ago with two challenges in mind – my own personal development, because this was a hotel with more guest and events capacity than my previous roles, and the development of the business, by growing our revenue and maximising the building’s incredible potential. We are in an area of exciting regeneration for the city and we want to be a major part of that.

How have you helped to shape Titanic's sustainable working practices?

I want to create an environmentallyaware culture within the hotel, and bring the team along on the green journey with us. That’s why key members regularly visit our local waste management company to see exactly what happens to the waste once it leaves the hotel. I’ve implemented a strong green policy within the hotel and created a green team to drive the vision of the hotel’s sustainability policy.

Why is it important for the hotel to have an environmental policy and carry it out?

An increasing number of guests, both those staying individually and also event organisers, look for green credentials when booking so from a business point of view it is vital that we meet their expectations to remain at the forefront of the hospitality sector in Liverpool City Region. It is also essential for us to operate responsibly and ethically, playing our part in the bigger picture to help the planet.

Tell us more about the waterway clean-up you do

We hire a specially made boat from local marine and engineering company Liverpool Water Witch which we use to carry out regular clean-ups, weekly or fortnightly in spring/summer. I completed six weeks’ training to be licensed to operate the boat and now I use it to help clear all the litter and debris from the water surrounding the hotel and Tobacco Warehouse which is then separated and recycled. This reduces water pollution and protects the natural habitat for marine life, and it improves the appearance for residents.

What are your green goals for Titanic in the future?

One of our main aims is to achieve green accreditation for Titanic Hotel which recognises our sustainable practices and highlights our environmental commitment to guests, events clients and the wider industry. We intend to continue our efforts to reduce energy and water consumption, reduce the waste we send to landfill and reduce our carbon footprint by further increasing our use of local products and services. By engaging with our suppliers, we plan to reduce the amount of packaging, singleuse plastics and bio-degradable pots we use, while introducing more recycled paper products such as recyclable pens and keycard wallets, across the hotel.
