The Non-League Football Paper

OLLY’S OUR TROUBLE SHOOTER!

- By Sam Elliott

IF you’ve experienced the showers after a game at Coggeshall Town recently, odds are that your heart may have skip-skip-skipped a beat.

But thanks to pop star Olly Murs, the icy blast that came players’ way after a visit to the Eastern Counties Division One club are now a thing of the past. The X-Factor star loves his NonLeague football – and after playing in the lower league with hometown club Witham Town before finding fame, he knows all about dressing rooms which could do with a bit of sprucing up. A regular in England colours in Soccer Aid every years, Murs can rarely resist the lure of an offer to get his boots back on. The 32-year-old was invited to play in a match against an Ipswich Town side last week and although he couldn’t commit to turning out more often, he didn’t leave without giving the Step 6 club a gift they won’t forget.

“It’s fair to say some of the facilities were dreadful,” the Troublemaker singer said.

Banter

“I said to the guys at Coggeshall after the match ‘let me put some money in and we’ll get it sorted out’ and they said it’s something they would be on board with.

“I called my plumber and asked if he could sort the showers out and he agreed so we got it done.

“They are an up-and-coming club with an exciting future. I’m a football fan as everyone knows so that’s exciting for me.

“Music has always been my second thing, forget about music…it’s my second love! Football has always come first as anyone would tell you.”

Murs sat down with The NLP in 2013, and it was clear then that he longs for Saturday afternoons in the Ryman League.

“A lot has happened to me in the last few years,” he told us.“But I miss playing football a lot. Being on tour is great, you still get the banter, but I really miss having the lads around me three times a week joking and playing around – often maybe turning up a little bit still drunk from the night before!

“We’d spend the warm up talking about the antics we got up to the night before and that’s why you’ve got to love Non-League football and the characters you get at every club.”
