FA VASE ROUND-UP

- By Robin Jones

The action is hotting up with the romance of the cup – but how did your team fare yesterday?

SOUTHERN Combination Division One side East Preston had already dispatched three higher-league outfits in cup competitions this season, but 2013’s Vase finalists Tunbridge Wells never looked like becoming scalp number four as they ran out comfortable 4-1 winners at The Lashmar.

Ryan Crandley gave the Southern Counties East Premier side a sixthminute lead before Jason Barton poked home from close range to add a second 17 minutes later.

Crandley notched his second before Perry Spackman made it 4-0, all before the hour, deeming Dylan Barnes’ late effort for East Preston a consolation.

Meanwhile, eight goals in the first half saw rampant Southern Combination Premier Division pacesetters

Shoreham slaughter Division One strugglers Oakwood 10-0 on the road.

Robert O’Toole opened the scoring and went on to notch a hat-trick, with George Gaskin also hitting three and Charlie Pitcher and Devante Davis one each. Freddie Barker and Jamie Craddock wrapped up the scoring.

Westfields hit eight without reply past fellow Midland League side

Dudley Sports, with Craig Jones hitting a hat-trick, Richard Graves two and Jamie Molyneux, Dan Polan and Anderson Ongono one each.

An extra-time hat-trick from Declan Fletcher helped Congleton Town to a 7-3 home win over Bacup Borough. Goals from Congleton’s Kieron Kenny, Ben Alston and an own goal made it 3-3 after 90 minutes with Fletcher and Michael Koral making sure of the win.

John Hodgkinson bagged a double and Harry Thompson, Liam Britton, Ben Gorman, John Beckwith and Andrew Hill hit a goal each as Barnoldswick Town crushed visitors Stokesley Sports Club 7-1 – the same scoreline which saw Wolverhampton Sporting overcome Bewdley Town. Daniel Westwood bagged a hat-trick, Dimitri Dunkley a brace while Brad Lewis and Jonathan Letford also scored.

Two extra-time goals from Matt Drummond earned Helston Athletic a historic 3-1 win at Portishead Town in what was the Cornish club’s firstever venture into the FA Vase, while fellow South West Peninsula outfit

Tavistock won 6-0 at nearby Keynsham Town. Rossington Main went down 4-0 at home to Bootle, who scored through Daniel Murphy, Carl Peers, Ryan Cox and Josh Hamilton, while Banstead Athletic returned from Holmesdale with a 4-1 win. On Friday, Bishop Auckland suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to lower-level Billingham Town. The eagerly-awaited derby between Eastern Counties outfit Haverhill Rovers and their tenants Haverhill Borough ended with the latter winning 1-0 thanks to a Ryan Phillips goal.
