GS BOSS HUNT IS ON AFTER TEN-GOAL MAULING

- By Jon Couch

ANDY HUNT reckons he had no choice but to resign after his side’s 10-0 midweek defeat – and would have done so even if his team were top of the league!

The Godalming Town boss says Monday night’s humiliation at Carshalton Athletic left his position untenable with the Wey Court side rock bottom of Ryman Division One South.

The humbling on Carshalton’s 3G surface proved the final straw for Hunt, whose side has struggled with the switch from Southern Central Division this season, claiming just one point from their opening eight matches under his tenure.

But Hunt insists he can leave the club with his head held high – and reckons interim boss Darren Wheeler can turn their fortunes around.

“The Carshalton result was just the culmination of what’s been a frustrating start to the season,” Hunt said. “By moving leagues we lost a large corps of our squad from last year and we’ve had to rebuild from scratch in a strong division.

“Monday night was the worst game of football I’ve ever been involved in and I never want to go through that again. Even if we were top of the league and lost 10-0 I would have resigned. My position had been left untenable.

“I am still proud of the three and half years I had at the club and what we set out to achieve. I can leave with my head held high.

“It was time for a change and if Darren can instil a bit of confidence back into the side, then I’ll think he can turn things around. They are more than capable.”
