DOVER A 3 SOUTHPORT 0

- By Jason Burns

DOVER’S two Rickys scored the goals to set up a comfortable home win as Southport’s inevitable relegation was confirmed.

Ricky Modeste slotted in the first and his exquisite lob rounded off the win. Ricky Miller fired in his 36th goal of the season a minute earlier as Athletic moved into the top five at the expense of Aldershot.

Delighted boss Chris Kinnear said: “I am really, really pleased today. We are second highest scorers in the league and you can see why with the attacking football we played.”

The home side were almost ahead within minutes. Robbie Cundy cleared Connor Essam’s header off the line, before the defender blazed the rebound over.

Modeste’s effort bounced just wide, but it was not long before the winger was celebrating. Having evaded the attentions of Neil Ashton, Modeste’s first effort was blocked by Chris Cheetham, but he was able to slot the ball in at the second attempt. Two quick fire strikes in the second half sealed the win. Miller latched onto Moses Emmanuel’s pass and fired through the legs of Cheetham to double Dover’s lead and then Modeste lofted the ball over the keeper following clever play from Miller. It was a sad day for Southport as their eight year stint in NonLeague’s top flight came to an end. “Dover have an effective game plan and they perform it well,” said boss Andy Preece. “It’s gutting to go down and we will look at where we are over the next few weeks.”
