TOWN CURB LOSING RUN WITH GUTSY AWAY POINT

- By Andrew Marshall

ALTRINCHAM 1 ALFRETON T 1

A BATTLING display earned Alfreton Town their first point in seven at Altrincham, with Andrew Monkhouse’s first-half strike cancelled out by an own goal from Reds keeper Fabian Spiess.

The Derbyshire side had lost six on the bounce but started brightly as Wesley Atkinson played a lovely through-ball to Adam Priestley but was denied by a fantastic reaction stop from Tim Deasy.

The Robins grew into the game and could’ve been ahead on the halfhour mark as the lively Nicky Clee ran clear but stumbled as he shot and Spiess saved.

Niall Heaton missed a point-blank header for Alfreton before the visitors went in front on 40 minutes, Craig Westcarr showing his skill on the left to create space and chip for Monkhouse to head past Deasy.

Alty were the better side after the break and equalised ten minutes after the restart, albeit fortuitously. A driven Shaun Densmore cross from the left was fumbled by Spiess after a challenge from Micah Evans and the ball spilled over the line.

Later in the half, Densmore headed over a Chris Lynch cross before Evans should’ve secured the points for hosts. A scramble in the box ended with the ball spilling to Evans on the six-yard line, but he fired way over the bar.
