HELLENIC LEAGUE

- DAVID GROVES

BRACKNELL TOWN bounced back from their end-of-season heartbreak in superb style, thrashing Headington Amateurs 5-1 in last Thursday’s Bluefin Sport Hellenic Challenge Cup tie, which was played at Larges Lane following agreement by both clubs.

Adam Cornell and Terence Bohane both bagged braces and Ian Davies was also on target for the Robins, while Luke Cuff grabbed Headington Amateur’s 85th-minute consolation.

Town missed out agonisingly on the title and promotion to the Southern League, as Thame United went up after last week’s thrilling season finale.

In the semi-finals of the Bluefin Sport Hellenic Supplementary Cup, Tuffley Rovers beat Fairford Town 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1, watched by 106 fans at Glevum Park, and Oxford City Vets A defeated Goring United B 6-2.

Another strong crowd of 132, at The Elms Recreation Ground, saw Highworth Town pip Brimscombe & Thrupp 3-2 after extra-time in their Bluefin Sport Hellenic Challenge Cup tie.

The top-flight programme was completed as third-bottom hosts Oxford City Nomads beat fourth-bottom Ascot United 2-0, thanks to goals from Deon Gallagher and Billy Gillett.

Tuffley Rovers, who finished tenth, defeated lowly visitors Highmoor-Ibis 3-1, courtesy of early efforts from Shayne Anson, Harry Walker and Ryan Dobbins. Joe Grant reduced the arrears in vain, netting just after Dobbins on 28 minutes.
