BUXTON 1 CLEETHORPES TOWN 2

- By Tony Tomlinson

CLEETHORPES did Division One South proud with a deserved victory at Premier Division Buxton to earn a place in Monday’s draw – but they were made to work hard for their win.

The Bucks had the elements in their favour in the first half but neither side could fashion a clear chance before the interval, even though both teams had passed the ball effectively and in entertaining style.

After the break the exchanges remained even. So the opening goal by the visitors just short of the hour was something of a surprise.

Veteran centre-back Matt Bloomer headed home from a long free-kick from the right to get the scoreline going.

Town built on their advantage and doubled the lead in the 68th minute after seizing on a midfield error with Jonathan Oglesby driving the ball home from 15 yards.

An isolated flare-up three minutes later saw a player sent off from either side, after which Buxton gradually increased the pressure, leading to an 88th-minute goal.

Brad Abbot set up Luke Hinsley for a fierce, angled, low cross-shot into the far side of the goal to seal things.

The pressure on the visiting goal was now intense but with virtually the last kick of the game Joe Maguire had a shot hacked from the line.
