TAMWORTH 3 SOUTHPORT 3

- By Matt Panter

CONNOR TAYLOR’S 90th-minute header saw Tamworth come from 3-1 down to salvage a draw against struggling Southport.

Jason Gilchrist’s hattrick looked like giving the Sandgrounders a first league win since September but they were left to rue Tamworth’s late fight back.

The visitors enjoyed a dream start as Gilchrist coolly slotted home Jack Sampson’s low cross on five minutes.

Tamworth responded and Andy Burns whipped in a cross which Zack Kotwica headed over the bar, while Darryl Knights’ effort was blocked by keeper Jon Worsnop.

Jack Lane’s downward header from a corner was then flicked onto the bar by Kotwica while, at the other end, Jordan Hallam fired a 20-yard effort straight at Shaun Rowley.

The Lambs were in desperate need of a boost in the second half as Callum Powell’s low drive was gathered by Worsnop.

However, Southport made it 2-0 on 46 minutes as Gilchrist neatly chipped the ball over Rowley.

Taylor then saw a shot saved before Tamworth got one back on 71 minutes as Powell whipped in a cross for Kotwica, whose header deflected in off Curtis Jones.

Southport restored their two-goal advantage on 75 minutes when Gilchrist completed his hat-trick with a low drive. The Lambs pulled another back on 81 minutes as sub Bradley Reid slid in to convert Powell’s low cross before Burns’ ball was headed home by Taylor to complete the fight back.
