GLENN OUT AS GAFFER AFTER TOWN LET IN FIVE

- By Rich Walker

AFTER this ruthless defeat at the hands of a Bradley Bubb-inspired Wealdstone, Glenn Tamplin stood down as boss of Billericay – following through on the threats he made this week that he would ‘sack’ himself should the result go against him.

The Ricay owner – who is currently under police investigation for threatening behaviour and blackmail – made the statement after the Bostik Premier leaders had lost in midweek to Folkestone Invicta.

And it seems this resounding defeat at the hands of National South Stones was enough for the controversial boss to back up his words.

Speaking after the match, Tamplin told The

Echo: “When I asked the players to give up a week’s wages for the way they have performed in the last seven days, they didn’t consider me.

“Why should I consider them?

“I will stick with the squad. I will see the season out as assistant manager, but I am so frustrated.

“I have spent more than two million on this club and all I wanted was players to donate a week’s wages after their performances in the past week. Only seven or eight said they would.

“They are not matching my investment. We are not getting the results for what I am paying, so I am stepping down.”

Wealdstone handed a debut to Bubb, signed during the week from Ebbsfleet, whilst Billericay were without former Wealdstone man Josh Urquhart through concussion, and had to press Robbie Evans into service in an unfamiliar full-back role. Billericay thought they had taken an early lead when Sam Deering finished, only to be denied by the referee’s assistant’s flag. And that was about as good as it got for Billericay, who were forced back as the visitors tore down the wings. Wealdstone took the lead when Matt Whichelow fed Bubb, who was allowed space to beat Evans before racing through to beat Alan Julian. Billericay looked to hit back; Deering and Robinson combined before the latter hit a cross that was headed in for the equaliser by Rob Swaine. Parity was short-lived, as more slack defending allowed Bubb the opportunity to score his second as he squeezed his shot past Julian from inside the box. And the tie was over as a contest as Town endured a torrid few minutes shortly before half-time. First Samuel Cox fed Ricky Wellard, who blasted past Julian. Minutes later Wealdstone added another when Julian failed to punch Whichelow’s corner. Early in the second half, Bubb completed his hat-trick with a cool finish. All Billericay had to show for their efforts was a late goal from Ricky Modeste, who finished with a header.
