COLWYN’S CHALLENGE RALLIES

- By Jon Haslam

TWO GOALS from Astley Mulholland bolstered

Colwyn Bay’s play-off hopes as they buried

Brighouse 4-0. After a slow start Tom McCready’s pass found Mulholland, who opened the scoring on 28 minutes.

A Brighouse defensive mix-up gifted Danny Andrews Bay’s second.

On 49 minutes, Mulholland broke free on the left and set up Elliot Rokka.

Bay completed their rout as Mulholland latched on to the end of a long throw to nudge in ten minutes later.

Brighouse had a chance to get one back with a late penalty, but Matt Cooper saved Danny Grimshaw’s spot kick. Tadcaster Albion enjoyed the same scoreline, as they extended their unbeaten run to six with a 4-0 home victory over fellow playoff hopefuls Droylsden.

The visitors dominated possession for large spells in the opening 45 without really threatening. One shot on target by Sefton Gonzales was saved by Michael Ingram.

With the half drawing to a close, Taddy struck first blood as Pete Davidson cleverly sent a corner to the back post where centre-back Josh Barrett headed home.

Droylsden, who are still searching for their first win of 2018, should have drawn level in the first minute of the second half but captain Ciaran Kilheeney hit wide from the edge of the area.

This miss proved costly as the confident Brewers doubled their lead on the hour mark, when Billy Whitehouse’s corner caused havoc as Savory’s close range effort was blocked on the line.

It came to Barrett who unleashed a rocket into the roof of the goal for his second.

The third came 15 minutes from time as Whitehouse curled a sublime free-kick into the back of the net. A fourth was added on 86 minutes, as right-back Harry Sheppeard carried the ball 60 yards before cutting back to Chris Howarth, who side-footed smoothly in. Elsewhere, ten-man

Ossett Town claimed a 20 victory at Ramsbottom United with two late goals.

Ossett were reduced to ten men on 43 minutes when Kane Bingley picked up two yellow cards in ten minutes.

The deadlock was broken on 69 minutes when a free-kick in the Ramsbottom box found its way to Jason Yates, who hooked the ball beyond Sam Ashton to claim the lead.

The hosts pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but Ossett secured the points when an unmarked Charlie Freeman lashed home.

Two red cards marred

Goole’s 2-1 victory over

Skel’dale, as they snatched their second away win of the season.

Goole’s Danny South was sent off after 41 minutes for stamping on Liam Hollett, but they still took the lead before the break when Scott Smith nipped between two defenders to head home.

Chris Walton doubled Goole’s lead on 63 minutes, before Skelmersdale’s Josh Wardle clawed one back five minutes later.

Skelmersdale’s misery deepened as Hollett was sent off. Atherton Collieries made it six unbeaten as they thundered to a 2-1 win over Glossop.

Courtney MeppenWalter opened the scoring for Glossop as he poked home after 33 minutes, but Atherton responded a minute later as Ben Hardcastle curled into the top-right corner

Vincent Bailey made the difference as he caught the keeper off his line and finished.
