Volunteers reap ultimate reward

-

WE were surprised to read the letter from Ryan Herrmann (Fans’ Forum, August 12) regarding not being given free entry at Wingate & Finchley FC through working as a volunteer.

Surely the idea of volunteering is to give something back to your local community and make a difference – giving something for no expectation of reward.

As a fan-owned community club, Chester FC could not afford to pay the small army of volunteers that help to run the club and certainly could not manage without their day-to-day input – it’s not just about match days!

The club work on the principle that everyone pays and there is no expectation from our volunteers that they should not pay and the majority also support the club by being season ticket-holders too, obviously taking advantage of early-bird offers but that’s the only concession.

So well done all those volunteers in football giving freely of their time and skills for no reward other than the satisfaction of knowing they are doing a good job. MARION & JOHN NEEDHAM via email I FEEL I have to respond to the post from Ryan Herrmann regarding volunteering.

I empathise with Ryan’s position as I have been unemployed in the past myself, but volunteering is about giving your time and services for free.

Who knows, there may be someone connected with his club that recognises his skills and points him in the direction of employment? BARRY WHEWAY, via email
