The Non-League Football Paper

THE WEEK IN WORDS

-

In our new feature, we give our take on another hectic week around the Non-League scene

AND SO the managerial merry-go-round spins into action.

Filed in the ‘Surprising’ category is the departure of Jay Saunders from Maidstone United and is covered on pages not far from this one.

Saunders’ exit was announced on Tuesday, two days after an entry into the ‘Not surprising’ group from a club the other side of the Thames in Essex, that being Billericay.

News emerged on Sunday afternoon on social media that Harry Wheeler had been sacked after having the temerity to lose at Chippenham Town, the first defeat in 29 games and their only one this season.

It’s even thought the decision was delivered before the game via text message with owner Glenn Tamplin seemingly changing his mind on his pre-season promise that Wheeler would be boss.

A week on and a statement has yet to be released but Wheeler wasn’t in the dug-out for their win against his former club St Albans City on Monday, with assistant Tristan Lewis taking the reins. As always with the Blues, watch this space.

In the National League North there was a managerial resignation at FC United of Manchester.

Player-boss Tom Greaves, inset, released an emotional statement explaining his decision to stand down from the Red Rebels, where he is the club’s all-time leading scorer. Finding it hard to juggle the job with his own business and young family, the 33year-old also admitted the job, which he took last season when Karl Marginson left, had come too soon in his career. “Everyone involved with the club knows what a special place it is to me and will therefore know this has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make regarding my career,” he said. “I’m not just the manager or player at this club, I’m a fan and I want, like everyone else, the best for the club and I don’t feel like I’m the right man for this job at this time, and I don’t feel like I’d be doing right by the club to continue as manager.”

Greaves has since joined Step 3 side Hyde United to continue his playing career.

Further down the Pyramid in the Bostik South Central, John Dreyer has quit Ware citing the need to give his family and business more time too.
