LATE DRAMA AS MOORS SHOCK THE BLUEBIRDS

- By Liam Bewsher

SOLIHULL MOORS boss Tim Flowers admitted Barrow deserved something out of the game as his side claimed all three points.

Late goals from Luke Maxwell and Adi Yussuf gave Moors a 2-0 lead before Tyler Smith pulled one back and John Rooney had the chance to earn a dramatic draw but fired his penalty over the bar.

“It’s a very good result against a team that were undefeated at home but you’ve got to be honest in football, I thought that Barrow were the better side today,” he told The NLP.

“I thought that they certainly deserved something out of the game; they’ve changed styles from last season and have some really good technical players. I felt that our players at times were everywhere where the ball wasn’t.”

Barrow boss Ian Evatt said: “Again we dominated the game, frustrating because that’s probably the best we’ve played in terms of our patience and possession, it’s frustrating, we had a couple of chances to take the lead and need to be more clinical at both ends of the pitch.”

It took 11 minutes for either side to have an effort on goal, as Smith was guilty of putting a good opportunity wide for AFC.

Former Barrow striker Yussuf looked to be a thorn in AFC’s side as he had a good chance from a corner that the Tanzanian headed into ground and over.

In the 34th minute Barrow went within inches of taking the lead as Rooney’s free-kick curled low around the Solihull wall and hit the post. The rebound fell to Smith, but the Sheffield United loanee hit the side-netting. The first effort of the second half came in the 52nd minute as Luke Burgess set up Smith, who shot wide. On the hour mark Barrow hit the post through Jack Hindle and soon after Josh Kay forced an excellent save from Ryan Boot after Luke Burgess had beaten three men. In the 85th minute, Solihull took the lead when a cross from the left was punched out by Firth, straight to Maxwell who bulleted a volley into the bottom-right corner. AFC conceded a second moments later, as Yussuf condemned his former side to defeat following a marauding run by Jamie Reckord, who pulled the ball back to the Moors striker, who chipped the ball over Firth. In the 90th minute Tyler Smith pulled a goal back by turning on the edge of the area and drilling the ball into the top left corner, leaving Boot with no chance. Unbelievably Barrow were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute after a foul on Burgess. But Rooney put the spot-kick high over the bar down the centre of the goal.
