DEAL PARK THE BUS – STONES ROLL WITH SOL?

-

SACKED Egham Town manager Simon Lane says he was warned about taking the job last January, and so it has proved. The former Northwood boss has been axed by chairman Pat Bennett just four games into the season following a 3-0 defeat at Chalfont St Peter. In a parting statement, Lane said: “When any manager loses his job four games into the season with a brand new squad, there is not too much to say that real football people won’t have already worked out. “When the chairman reached out to me and I took the job at Egham I was warned by others that it was a tough gig. As Saturday’s events showed this has been borne out.” The club has moved swiftly to appoint Ashley Smith, the ex-Maidenhead and Chesham midfielder, into his first No.1 managerial role.

DEAL Town have parked the bus at their Charles Ground, but not on the pitch! The year 2000 FA Vase winners have unveiled a double-decker bus as their new stand after a fire in 2011 destroyed their semi-built new pavilion. The 117-seater Volvo was bought by club chairman Dave Chmura on eBay for £3,200 last December and has been placed parallel to the pitch. The bottom floor will be used as a mini club museum, while the top deck has room for 40 to 50 people plus two hospitality areas.

SOL Campbell, “one of the greatest minds in football”, was linked with the Maidstone United job this week.

The former Arsenal and England defender is believed to be in the running for the vacant manager’s position after long-standing boss Jay Saunders left the club last week.

Campbell was rejected by Oxford United and Grimsby Town this year as he tried to take his first steps into management.

“Maybe it was a lack of experience, things like that, but it’s a full circle,” he

said. “Experience? How do I get experience? Well, I need a job to get experience.

“I don’t want to go too low that it’s a struggle, and I don’t want to go too low that I’m under someone and thinking ‘what am I doing here?’ I would rather be managing a club myself.

“I can’t believe some people, I’m one of the greatest minds in football and I’m being wasted because of a lack of experience or ‘maybe he talks his mind too much’.”

I wonder why no one has appointed him… yet.
