Barwell tamely wave white flag

- By Luke Pawley

BARWELL collapsed out of the FA Cup with this hefty defeat at the hands of their Derbyshire visitors.

It was a disappointing display that saw the home side concede five goals and tamely wave the white flag in a needless surrender.

Buxton dominated the opening exchanges but failed to make the breakthrough while Barwell captain Brady Hickey was impressive, pressing the visitors at the other end.

Even at this early stage of proceedings, it looked as though the home team would have their work cut out to stay in the game and progress in the competition.

Just as it looked as though the opening half would finish goalless, Buxton grabbed their opener six minutes before half-time.

Josh Meade’s shot was parried by Canaries keeper Liam Castle but only into the path of Liam Hardy who tapped home to put his side in front and firmly in control of the game.

To make matters worse they struck again in the final seconds of the half, Hardy again the scorer when he directed the ball past Castle at his near post.

It was frustrating for the home team after they had weathered the storm for so long in the first half.

Hickey reduced the deficit in stoppage time with a half volley but Buxton restored their two-goal cushion just before the hour when substi- tute Kade Coppin found the net.

Hickey duly bagged his second of the game to keep Barwell in the hunt but this was cancelled out soon after when Diego De Girolamo scored with a close-range strike.

The visitors continued to press and wrapped up their place in the next round when the lively De Girolamo rounded Castle before rolling the ball over the line from close range.
