RING PUTS SEAL ON BLUES WIN

- By Tom Harle

BURY Town claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Great Wakering Rovers as Jason Ring’s sickening late own-goal settled the contest.

After their disappointing FA Cup exit to Burnham, the Blues were desperate and relied on a huge slice of luck to take the three points.

They led within 60 seconds, when a free-kick was nodded goalward by Ollie Fenn and the ball fell to the feet of Ollie Hughes who tapped in.

Rovers grew into the contest and pulled level through Steve Butterworth’s penalty on the stroke of half-time, after Jake Gordon was clumsily brought down by Ryan Stafford.

After the break, Bury regained the lead on 52 minutes when Tanner Call struck a solid shot that deflected off a defender and the post to nestle in the net.

The visitors were level again when a free-kick routine saw Billy Johnson find the top corner with 79 minutes on the clock.

But Ring would have the decisive touch, somehow heading into his own net trying to nod a Hughes cross clear. Meanwhile, Basildon

United stayed top of the table with Jack Adlington’s goal enough to earn them victory over

Soham Town Rangers at Gardiners Close.

Romford produced a fabulous display of attacking football to beat

AFC Sudbury 3-1 at Future Fuel Stadium, climbing to the fourth in the table.

The backbone of the result was a well-taken brace from Taylor Tombides – brother of former West Ham striker Dylan, who passed away four years ago aged 20 with testicular cancer.

Tombides opened the scoring on 13 minutes with a howitzer of a strike, before finish off a flowing move seven minutes later.

Jonathon Nzengo made it three in the 26th minute with a firm finish.

The Suds momentarily recovered from their ruinous start when Ben Hunter swept home on the half-hour mark.

But they were beaten and remain 13th with only

one win from five games.

Elsewhere Aveley moved to the brink of a play-off place with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Heybridge Swifts.

Sam Bantick’s brace put Swifts 2-0 up just after half-time.

But an inspired double from Alex Akrofi and Tom Richardson’s strike saw Aveley climb to sixth.

A single goal straight after half time by Michael Mignot was enough to earn Grays Athletic the points in their Essex derby with Brentwood Town.

Both sides failed to convert their chances in the first half and after Mignot’s 46th minute strike there few clear chances with Grays sub Ade Cole going closest. Clinical Barking beat

Mildenhall Town 2-1, hampering the hosts’ bid for a first win.

Barking went ahead through an unmarked Afolabi Obafemi, who slotted home after a neat turn.

A calamitous error by midfielder Abs Seymour allowed Rashid Kamara a simple tap in to double Barking's lead just before the break.

Hall pulled one back after 65 minutes through the giant Thomas Boxer from the spot, before a chaotic closing period.

Coggeshall Town were held to a 1-1 draw by second-bottom Tilbury after a controversial late penalty.

Cogg led just after halftime when Connor Hubble turned in Ross Wall’s flick.

Tilbury were awarded a penalty with seconds on the clock, George Cocklin dismissed for handling the ball on the goal line.

Lewis Smith stepped up for the visitors and placed his penalty in the corner to snatch a point.

Dereham Town ran out deserved 2-0 winners over Witham Town, with goals from Daniel Beaumont and Ashley Jarvis enough for the victory.

Two strikes from Josh Hutchinson earned

Canvey Island a 2-1 away

win over Maldon & Tiptree.
