Deadly Roberts hits late Hemel winner

WESTON-SUPER-MARE 1 HEMEL HEMPSTEAD TOWN 2

- By Alex Crowther

WESTON got off to a poor start when Callum Martin robbed Ben Swallow of possession and it set the tone for the game.

The ball ended up with Phil Roberts, who calmly slid the ball beyond Luke Purnell.

Jason Pope was sent off for a second yellow card, Roberts getting the better of the centreback, and was brought down by the 22 year-old.

Weston got the equaliser on the stroke of half-time when a Jarrad Welch free-kick beat the Hemel defence, allowing skipper Jacob Cane to bring the ball down and stab in from a few yards out.

In the second half, Welch’s free kick from 25 yards was parried away by Laurie Walker, before Purnell stopped Roberts from close range, James Kaloczi striking the post from the rebound.

Weston sub Jamie Lucas muscled his way past Billy Clifford, seeing his left-footed 25-yard drive tipped round the post.

Hemel’s winner came though when a kick from Walker was inadvertently nodded down by Matt Bower as he attempted to clear, straight to Roberts who cut onto his right and curled in from 25 yards.
