ACE AMU IS NOT KIDDING IN ROUT

- By Rob Carter

DUNSTABLE Town stormed to a 5-1 victory over basement dwellers

Kidlington thanks to a hat-trick from Arel Amu.

The win gave Dunstable just their second win of the season, lifting their points total up to seven and undoubtedly boosting their confidence.

Meanwhile, a horror start to the season for Kidlington continued as they brought their goals conceded up to a whopping 30 – despite netting their first in the league.

Dunstable’s goals came in two bunches as Amu led the way and made sure the game was never really in doubt.

Amu claimed his first goal in the 15th minute, which set the tone for the rest of the game, and he found the net again just seven minutes later, extending his team’s lead to 2-0.

The lone bright spot for Kidlington came 14 minutes later in the 36th minute as Jamie Calvin found his team’s first goal of the season.

Any optimism gained for Kidlington was quickly extinguished – just nine minutes into the second half, Amu converted a penalty, giving Dunstable Town a 3-1 lead.

Just nine minutes later it was 5-1, with Daniel Triff netting before and Saul Williams slotted away a penalty three minutes after.

Meanwhile, two sterling saves by Nick Bennion from Richard Gregory penalties ensured Bromsgrove Sporting earned a point with a 0-0 draw at Aylesbury.

For all Bromsgrove dominated play in the first half, it was the home side who had the best chances, with the lively Josh Williams having a couple of shots well saved by Jono Brown and Aaron King glancing a header from an enticing corner narrowly wide.

The second half became more open, with King having an opportunity saved by the smart Brown and Will Shorrock’s close-range shot blocked for Sporting early on.

The last 10 minutes were all Bromsgrove – a Nathan Hayward header from a corner saved well by a diving Bennion preceded Gregory’s two saved spot-kicks.

The first came as John Pykett was felled by Bennion, the resultant a firmly-struck shot to the keeper’s left that was palmed out.

The second, in the final minute of four added on, came courtesy of a handball.

Up stepped Gregory, who aimed for a similar place, but to no avail – the same outcome, with his rebound also kept out incredibly by an inspired Bennion.

Bromsgrove’s goalless draw kept them top, for now, as Cambridge City stole a 1-0 victory from

Welwyn Garden City in a scrappy enocunter that put them one point shy of the top five.

This game could have been a bigger win for Cambridge had they not missed a pair of golden opportunities.

The first such opportunity came just before half-time as Ryan Sharman flicked a header just past the post.

About halfway through the second half, despite being on the back foot, Cambridge missed their second opportunity, this time from just a yard out, somehow managing to lift the ball over the bar.

Fortunately, they were not made to pay for their wastefulness as they instead capitalised on City’s when Sharman atoned for his earlier chance to put the Lilywhites ahead 1-0.

Second-half substitute Josh Oyinsan saw red after receiving a second yellow for diving but the hosts couldn’t capitalise on their late man advantage, Bromsgrove doing enough to keep themselves top of the table.
