Eagles cup form suffered a Hitch

The Non-League Football Paper - - NEWS - ROY HUTCHINGS Chesterfield

IT is with great interest that I read your article on Hitchin Town (The NLP, October 28).

As a big fan of Bedford Town, I remember a trip to Top Field in the 1970s when the Eagles were in the Southern League and were quite well-known nationally for their FA Cup escapades.

Newcastle United, Brighton and Oxford were a few of the league clubs they defeated, as well as playing to packed crowds at home against the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Carlisle United.

One year they were drawn away to Hitchin, so my friends and I drove over to Hertfordshire expecting another big win.

But we drove home not so happy as, lo-and-behold, Hitchin beat us to give us a taste of our own medicine. Great memories though.

Thanks to The NLP I am still able to follow the Eagles and Wootton Blue Cross results.

MEMORIES: Top Field, home of Hitchin Town FC
