Albion shine bright against Diamonds
WITTON Albion’s record against AFC Rushden & Diamonds remains unblemished and a fourth successive win against them was a convincing one.
The visitors had a sight of goal when goalkeeper Greg Hall parried Ben Farrell’s drive but Tom Lorraine’s attempt was wild after he got to the loose ball.
They fell behind on 20 minutes when Tom Owens’ neat pass sent Cesaire clear and he steered the ball out of custodian Ben Heath’s reach. Rushden’s number one reacted smartly though to block Danny McKenna’s shot early in the second half before Jack Westbrook’s header hit the post at the other end.
Witton were then denied in similar fashion after River Humphreys stretched to divert Josh Wardle’s flickon against the crossbar.
Albion did double their lead though when Zack Reynolds, conscious that James Foley was behind him, sliced a curling cross from McKenna into his own goal.
Rushden rallied in an attempt to break their scoring duck against Carl Macauley’s men and Wardle smuggled a Lorraine header off the line when Hall failed to claim a high ball.
Owens’ effort, after Matty Devine’s glorious clipped pass found him in space, forced Heath to save low down late on.
