DIRECTOR of foot­ball Craig Hignett has been placed in tem­po­rary charge of Hartle­pool United af­ter Matthew Bates be­came the 11th per­ma­nent man­ager to be sacked by the club in ten years. A crowd of just over 1,700, Pools low­est in 20 years, turned out at Vic­to­ria Park on Tuesday night as Bates’ side were beaten 2-1 by AFC Fylde. It was their sixth con­sec­u­tive de­feat in the Na­tional League be­com­ing their worst los­ing run since March 2014 and saw them slip eight points adrift of the play-offs hav­ing started the sea­son strongly. Bates was given the role on a full­time ba­sis in the sum­mer af­ter suc­cess­fully avoid­ing rel­e­ga­tion last sea­son as care­taker boss fol­low­ing the dis­missal of Craig Har­ri­son. Hignett re-joined Hartle­pool in March af­ter be­ing sacked as man­ager in Jan­uary 2017. He will be as­sisted by coach Ged McNamee and goal­keeper coach Ross Turn­bull.
