CANNONS FIRE ON ISLANDS

- By Matt Nichols

QUALITY in the final third was the difference in the Channel Islands, as high-flying Hythe Town battled past Guernsey 2-0, with the hosts unfortunate not to get a point.

A free-kick teed up Hythe striker Zak Ansah to belt a 25-yarder that bounced in off the crossbar on nine minutes but the contest was even for the majority.

There was an element of luck about the second on 64 minutes as a Guernsey defensive block fell kindly for Ansah to set up Jack Sammoutis for a neat low finish into the far corner.

Guernsey were narrowly off-target several times and Cannons stopper Ryan Nicholls denied Kyle Smith a close-range rebound, while a strong performance by Callum Stanton and a goal-line block from Jamie Dodd prevented another for Hythe. Promotion hopefuls

Horsham ensured a fourth consecutive league win with a fine secondhalf display as they brushed aside Whitstable

Town 4-0. Despite being goalless at the break, Horsham broke the visitors’ resolve three minutes into the second half when Stuart West headed into his own net from a Horsham corner.

They doubled their lead less than ten minutes later when Charlie Harris’ cross was missed by everyone and nestled in the net.

Horsham added a third on 79 minutes as Lee Harding’s fierce cross was angled into the far side netting and there was still time for Harvey Sparks to cap a fine individual performance with a deserved goal, when he ran onto Joey Taylor’s defencesplitting ball and finished low.

Tommy Warrilow’s tenure at Ashford United got off to a great start with a 2-1 triumph in an allaction game at Phoenix Sports.

The energetic Sam Corne got on the end of a peach of a Tom Carlse cross to give Ashford the lead after 26 minutes and Danny Parish reacted quickest to slam home the ball when Steve Phillips could only parry a strong Stefan Cox drive early in the second half.

The goal of the game came soon after as Jeff Duah-Kessie danced his way through the Ashford defence before providing a stunning finish to narrow the deficit.

Phoenix had the perfect opportunity to level in the final minute when being awarded a penalty after a foul on Kweku Ansah.

Cox saw red for his protestation of the decision before Sam Mott superbly saved Ashley Probets’ spot-kick to seal the three points.

Haywards Heath kept up the pressure on the play-off places as they put

Greenwich Borough to the sword 4-1 away from home.

Josh Spinks gave Haywards Heath an early lead and although Teshuane Tyreece Walters levelled before the break, Andrew Dalhouse restored the visitors’ advantage early in the second half.

Callum Saunders then gave them some breathing room before Nathan Cooper wrapped it up 14 minutes from time.

The football produced by Herne Bay and Three

Bridges – two sides at the wrong end of the table – was very competitive but Bridges showed more fight and determination as they recorded a 3-0 triumph.

A Connor French brace in the space of two minutes near the end of the half gave Bridges a welldeserved lead at the break.

The second half followed in the same vein and French added his third by heading home from close range to seal a morale-boosting victory for the visitors. Meanwhile, Sevenoaks

Town came from behind to win their mid-table battle at Ramsgate 3-1.

Jake Mackenzie netted for Ramsgate after ten minutes before Frankie Sawyer’s 23rd-minute penalty levelled proceedings, Kenny Pogue slotted home before the break and Luke Coleman sealed victory late on. Sittingbourne’s scheduled clash with VCD

Athletic was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
