MARINE succumbed to titlechasers Warrington, a defeat which leaves the Mariners entrenched in the relegation zone.

Warrington began the game on the front foot and Jake Kirby’s drive from the angle was parried by home stopper Paddy Wharton.

James Murray glanced a header narrowly wide in the first half for the Whites from a Charley Edge cross, with Tony Gray doing likewise at the other end from exMarine loanee Bohan Dixon’s cross.

The deadlock was broken on 33 minutes as Dixon advanced from midfield to step inside a challenge, before firing a low shot from 22 yards past Wharton and into the corner of the net.

A second half of few chances saw Warrington push on and the outcome was in little doubt when they doubled their advantage on 69 minutes.

A fine team goal saw a ball sprayed out to the marauding Adam Hughes on the left, the ex-Marine defender putting his former side to the sword as he advanced to the by-line before clipping a pinpoint cross for Gray to nod home from close range.

Marine were grateful to Wharton for preventing further damage, the on-loan stopper parrying David Raven's effort before smothering at Jack Dunn’s feet.
