BAILEY IS LEADERS’ SCOURGE

- By Dan Barnes

ELLIOTT Bailey’s lastgasp equaliser saw Hertford Town clip Isthmian League South Central leaders Marlow’s wings.

The Blues may be winless in six league matches but Bailey’s late turn saw them hold their hosts to a fine 1-1 draw.

The two teams struggled to break each other down in the first half, although Hertford had shouts for a penalty turned down after Bailey appeared to be tugged back in the penalty area.

Early in the second half, Marlow capitalised on an unfortunate slip, Marcus Mealing taking full advantage to give his team the lead.

In response, the Blues’ Bailey headed a delivery down into the path of Charlie Edwards, who blasted an effort inches over the bar.

The visitors continued to press, Ruben SoarsJunior seeing an effort flicked away by a home defender while Ben WardCochrane also had a fearsome strike charged down.

And Hertford got their reward at the death, Soares-Junior teeing up Bailey to slot home and snare a share of the spoils on the day.

Meanwhile, Mark Bitmead helped himself to a second-half brace as Ashford Town romped to a 5-0 win at Uxbridge.

The visitors, who leapfrogged their opponents into sixth in the table, a point outside of the play-offs, took the lead through Adam Baigent before Kofi LockhartAdams doubled the advantage.

With virtually the last kick of the first half, Jack Beadle added to the visitors’ advantage before Bitmead rounded things off, notching with a header in the 48th and then a cool finish three minutes from time.

Chibuden Onokwai struck either side of halftime to help FC Romania banish the spectre of their torturous defeat to Ware with a 2-1 win at Waltham Abbey.

The Wolves, who were hammered 6-0 in their last outing, got off to a dream start as Onokwai pounced to give them the lead with just seven minutes on the clock.

The visitors were able to breathe all the more easily just past the hour mark when Onokwai was at it again to extend the lead from close range.

However, the Wolves wouldn’t have things all their own way and Abbey’s Ellis Brown notched with 16 minutes of normal time remaining to set up a tense finale.

But Romania held on for their fourth win of the campaign.

Struggling Molesey picked up a point at home to Hanwell Town, holding their play-off chasing opponents to a dour goalless draw.

Visiting keeper Sam Freeman had to be replaced by an outfield player after an injury but the two teams couldn’t be separated.

Elsewhere, the weekend’s wet weather accounted for a raft of fixtures in the South Central division. Bottom-of-the-table

South Park, who have racked up just one win in 13 games so far this season, were denied the opportunity to close the gap on 19th-placed Egham Town.

The two sides’ meeting at Whitehall Lane was called off due a waterlogged pitch.

Northwood remain 10th in the table after their clash with Chalfont St

Peter at the Acretweed Stadium went the same way, the fixture failing a lunchtime pitch inspection.

And the scheduled headto-head between 11th and 12th was also postponed due to the elements, with

Westfield denied the opportunity to take on Bedfont Sports.

The Surrey hosts, who were looking to extend their winning run to four matches, had promised free entry to all Woking season-ticket holders, whose side face League Two Swindon Town in second round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Westfield have confirmed that, due to the cancellation, they plan to honour that promotion during the rearranged fixture.
