BLOODS HOLD NERVE

- By Yashas Mudumbai

DROYLSDEN won a fivegoal thriller against sixth-placed Trafford to ease their relegation concerns in Division One West.

Despite going behind in the fourth minute from a Danny Wilkins strike, two headed goals from Sefton Gonzales, Liam Caddick and a penalty from Michael Brewster meant Droylsden earned just their fifth win of the season with a 3-2 triumph.

Gonzales also had a chance in the dying seconds to seal his hat-trick but skewed his rightfooted strike into the side netting when well-placed to score.

For Trafford, Lewis Nightingale’s free-kick and Chris Palmer’s strike from close range could not earn them a first win in four matches.

William Wells scored a stunning strike in the 89th minute for Market Drayton Town to make it two wins in a row for his side away at Clitheroe with a 3-2 success.

Jacob Gregory and Charles Knowles scored for Clitheroe and Drayton respectively in a manic opening five minutes and volley from Jud Ellis gave the away side the lead.

Just as the game looked like it was drifting, an endto-end last 15 minutes saw Clitheroe given a penalty, which was duly dispatched by Lewis Sugden.

But the strike from Wells made it a memorable afternoon for the visitors, who are now 11th in the league.

Through a bizarre incident, the referee at the 2-2 draw between Skelmersdale United and Kidsgrove Athletic needed to be stretchered off.

Neil Evans was taken off the field for an injury as Skelmersdale came back from 2-0 down to get a valiant point, finishing the game with 10 men.

A fine strike from Pete Williams and a headed goal from Adam Freeland looked to have given Grove a comfortable win.

But a goal from Louis Keegan and a penalty from Sean Yeldrem ensured that the bottom side got just their eighth point of the season.

Meanwhile, Mike Conlon scored in the 95th minute for Newcastle

Town hand them a 1-0 win over Mossley.

Mossley had courageously played 75 minutes of the game with 10 men after Logan Jeffs clearly fouled Chris Smith from Town when in a promising position to find the back of the net.

But Newcastle who had hit the woodwork three times, got their rewards as Conlon was the first to react to the ball in the box.

Goals from Danny Andrews and James Barrigan helped Colwyn Bay bounce back to winning ways in a 2-1 triumph over Glossop North End.

Colwyn Bay had lost their previous two matches in the league but a quick start ensured they were never going to have to chase the game.

Andrews’ strike hit the underside of the bar and Barrigan’s neat finish from inside the box gave them the advantage.

Jack Tuohy rifled a shot in from 25 yards in the last five minutes to give Glossop hopes of a comeback but Colwyn held on.

Leek Town made it three wins from four as they easily brushed aside

Kendal Town 3-0 to move just two points away from the playoff places.

Tim Grice’s header, Billy Sass-Davies’ strike from a corner and substitute Aaron Bott’s final-minute header gave the home side all three points.

The match also saw them record their second consecutive clean sheet.

Chasetown made it four games unbeaten as they surprised high-flying

Colne to come from behind and draw 1-1.

Despite Alex Curran’s deflected free-kick giving the visitors the lead within five minutes, Jazz Luckie’s powerful header gave the home side just their 15th point of the season.

Colne had racked up two consecutive 3-2 victories before this match but Chasetown had the better of the latter stages of the game to ensure that another late Colne win didn’t come to pass.

Chasetown find themselves 17th in the table while Colne are fourth.
