CARTA IS SIMPLY MAGNETIC

- By Dean Bradford

A JOEL Carta brace in the first half proved the difference as Corby Town ran out deserved 2-1 winners at Broadwater to end

Berkhamsted’s six-match winning run.

Berkhamsted took the lead when Matt Bateman held the ball up superbly before feeding Elliott Godfrey, who lashed home from 20 yards.

Carta equalised on 28 minutes when he finished off a free-kick and he was then on hand from a Sam Warburton corner to head Corby into the lead on 37 minutes.

With frustration building, Berkhamsted skipper Danny Murphy was sent off late on for a second booking as the away side held on.

At the Hillgrounds Stadium, Lee Close scored an 80th-minute winner for

Welwyn Garden City to decide a topsy-turvy affair with Kempston Rovers 32.

Alfie Powell’s far-post header from a corner opened the scoring for Kempston after 20 minutes but Ieuan Riley’s red card jeopardised their advantage.

Predictably, Welwyn overturned the deficit either side of half-time, firstly through Stuart Zanone’s cross-shot, which looped over the Rovers keeper.

Dave Keenlyside’s delicate chip made it 2-1 to Welwyn early in the second half but there was more to come from the ten men.

Mason Spence struck a wonderful 30-yard effort to equalise for the hosts but Close’s header proved pivotal.

Three first-half goals decided the contest as

Aylesbury United beat Kidlington 2-1. Max Hercules sparked the game into life after just four minutes, curling a stunning free-kick into the top corner.

United could have had a couple more before Josh Tooke’s equaliser.

Tre Mitford’s 26thminute winner proved to be decisive as he latched onto a ball over the top to continue his great scoring run. Cambridge City’s bad run continued as Sutton Coldfield ran out 2-0 winners at Westwood Road. Centre-back Adam Capel made an error which allowed Ryan Nesbitt to score the opener.

City almost fell further behind when Ben George had an effort cleared off the line but Lee Smith’s header from a long throw made sure Sutton climbed above their hosts in the table. Meanwhile, Thame

United snuck past Bedford 2-1. Although the hosts nearly conceded to Paul Benson’s chipped effort on 37 minutes, Thame took the lead almost instantly when David Lynn’s freekick evaded everyone and found the top-left corner.

Thame doubled their lead through Dan West’s low effort when he was given too much time in the box by a static Bedford defence.

Brett Longden found the head of Benson but it wasn’t enough.

Elsewhere, Aylesbury beat Yaxley 3-1 in their bottom-half clash.

Ryan Young beat three defenders before slipping in Ty Deacon to open the scoring after 19 minutes.

The away side scored again after a well-worked corner found Jordan Jenkins at the back post, who powered home.

Jenkins almost grabbed his second as he headed against the crossbar but Deacon found Ryan Young six minutes into the second half, who netted the Moles’ third.

Tom Waumsley grabbed a late consolation for the hosts who slip below Aylesbury. Coleshill Town beat North Leigh 2-1 in Oxfordshire.

Joe Smith and Nick Seabourne scored either side of half-time before Josh Pin netted for North Leigh to set up a tense ending. Elsewhere, Barton

Rovers executed a classic away-day performance to win 1-0 at Dunstable

Town, grabbing the clincher from a goalmouth scramble.

After the visitors scored early, Barton had their backs against the wall for much of the match as Dunstable sought an equaliser but their efforts proved in vain.
