Benfield pounce to edge home in thriller

NEW­CAS­TLE Benfield made it nine games un­beaten un­der for­mer Blyth Spar­tans man­ager Tom Wade af­ter a nine-goal thriller.

Runcorn went ahead five min­utes in, Dale Jen­nings strik­ing from out­side the box into the bot­tom cor­ner.

Benfield were level five min­utes later when Den­nis Knight fired in a fierce shot home.

Runcorn re­stored their lead against the run of play on the half hour, with Joe Heath find­ing the net from 30 yards.

Benfield equalised deep into first-half added time; Dale Pear­son stab­bing the ball home from the mid­dle of the box.

Benfield took the lead early in the sec­ond half when Knight’s ball across the box found Paul Brayson, who cut in­side to find bot­tom cor­ner.

Pear­son thought he’d sealed the win for Benfield, but Runcorn’s Craig Lin­field pulled a goal back to set up a grand stand fin­ish, and they equalised with three min­utes to go, Danny Burns scor­ing from close range.

There was to be an­other twist when Richie Slaugh­ter won the game for Benfield with the last kick, curl­ing a shot into the top cor­ner.
