Benfield pounce to edge home in thriller
NEWCASTLE Benfield made it nine games unbeaten under former Blyth Spartans manager Tom Wade after a nine-goal thriller.
Runcorn went ahead five minutes in, Dale Jennings striking from outside the box into the bottom corner.
Benfield were level five minutes later when Dennis Knight fired in a fierce shot home.
Runcorn restored their lead against the run of play on the half hour, with Joe Heath finding the net from 30 yards.
Benfield equalised deep into first-half added time; Dale Pearson stabbing the ball home from the middle of the box.
Benfield took the lead early in the second half when Knight’s ball across the box found Paul Brayson, who cut inside to find bottom corner.
Pearson thought he’d sealed the win for Benfield, but Runcorn’s Craig Linfield pulled a goal back to set up a grand stand finish, and they equalised with three minutes to go, Danny Burns scoring from close range.
There was to be another twist when Richie Slaughter won the game for Benfield with the last kick, curling a shot into the top corner.
