THERE’S NOWHERE TO HYDE FOR MART

- By Jon Couch

EMBARRASSED Basford United boss Martin Carruthers has reacted furiously to last Saturday’s 8-3 thrashing by Hyde United with a grovelling apology to fans – and a squad overhaul.

The Evo-Stik Premier club acted swiftly to their worst defeat for over half a century by refunding all gate admission for yesterday’s visit of South Shields, while offering season ticket-holders a free meal or donation to their chosen charity.

At the same time, Carruthers let go of duo Dion Meikle and Greg Tempest to make way for experienced striker Shaun Harrad and Coalville loanee Daniel Creaney.

A club statement read: “Basford United have not lost a game by a scoreline like this for over 50 years.

“All officials, management and players have been deeply upset by this.”

Basford lost the South Shields game yesterday 3-0.
