Fleetwood fires up free-flowing Marine

- By Brian Davis

SWINDON Supermarine were made to work hard for the three points at the Webbswood Stadium in a game that didn’t really get going until late into the second half.

In a first half of few chances, new signing from Gloucester City Mat Liddiard curled just wide before Marine had Jerel Ifil to thank for being in the right place at the right time to clear off the line.

Conor McDonagh missed a hatful of chances in both periods before the floodgates finally opened in the 78th minute.

The normally reliable forward curled wide in the 37th minute before missing from six yards out right on the stroke of half time.

In the second half, he hit the post from a Stuart Fleetwood pass before missing another tap-in after doing all the hard work with 20 minutes left.

It looked like it wouldn’t be the home side’s day until Ifil saw his effort hit two defenders before the linesman gave the goal as Staines keeper Louis Dixon clawed the ball out from behind the line.

It soon became 2-0 when Matt Williams volleyed in a scrambled effort from a Henry Spalding corner and it was Fleetwood who sealed the three points, curling into the top corner as Marine punished their opponents with three goals in five minutes.
