GRESLEY PAY THE PENALTY

- By Robin Mansfield

MORPETH’S 3-0 victory over Gresley FC saw the Highwaymen continue their push for the league title.

Morpeth opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a penalty converted by David Carson.

They doubled their tally eight minutes later with a header from Michael Turner from Ben Sayer’s corner.

Liam Henderson finished the first half scoring on 38 minutes with a header.

Lincoln United’s struggles continued as they went down 1-0 to Ossett

United courtesy of a solitary strike from Andy Priestley.

In a lively encounter chances were at a premium and Priestley’s fine near-post header was very much the exception.

United pressed in the second-half and couldn’t be faulted for effort but the elusive equaliser wouldn’t come.

Sheffield FC moved back into the play-off places after a scrappy 2-1 victory over Spalding United.

The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes following a Mitch Dunne backheel to Ted Cribley, whose drive from a narrow angle was turned home by leading scorer Marc Newsham.

The Tulips levelled following a close-range Leon Mettam header that the defence couldn't stop.

Straight from the restart Sheffield retook the lead, with a break on the right finding Cribley on the edge of the area and his fierce strike beat keeper Michael Duggan.

Both sides had opportunities to add to their tallies, with Jamie Ingham making a spectacular save from Bradley Wells, whilst Cribley had a chance to kill the game only to blast over from close range. Elsewhere Frickley Athletic drew 1-1 when

Pickering Town visited the Big Fellas Stadium.

The away team took the lead in the 24th minute when skipper Nick Thompson scuffed the ball into the Frickley net from six yards.

It was all level though after half an hour when interplay between Connor Smith and Tyler Walton teed up Jacob Hazel who fired home from close range. The second-half didn’t see any action of note until the 57th minute when Hazel, Todd Jordan and Greg Young had efforts that went close in very quick succession. Pontefract Collieries scored four second-half goals to beat Belper Town 4-2.

Belper Town went in two goals to the good at half-time courtesy of a Craig Nelthorpe penalty and a goal from Piteu Crouz but it was all Pontefract in the second-half.

Three goals in six minutes turned the game on its head and it was Christopher Jackson who got the ball rolling, scoring Pontefract’s first on the hour mark.

Michael Dunn then pulled them level just a minute later before Spencer Clarke gave them the lead.

Eli Hey ensured Pontefract took all three points from the game as they stay in the hunt for promotion.

Stamford beat Carlton Town 4-0 thanks to a Rob Morgan double.

Olly Morgan opened the scoring for Stamford after Ryan Seal and John Sands had hit the post.

Rob Morgan got his first of the game after Seal set him up and added a second and Stamford’s third on the hour mark, this time assisted by Kern Miller.

Seal rounded up the goal scoring ten minutes from time to send Stamford seventh and leave Carlton Town two points from the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Wisbech

Town beat Loughborough Dynamo 3-1 on their visit to the Nanpantan Sports Ground and moves four points off the bottom of the league.

First-half goals from Jon Fairweather and Toby Hilliard gave the Fenmen a half-time lead.

Karl Demidh pulled one back for Loughborough from the penalty spot but Eoin McQuaid put the game beyond doubt when he buried a free-kick. Stocksbridge Park Steels and bottom of the league team Marske United ended their match in a 0-0 stalemate.
