MEIKLE BREAKS MIKES’ HEARTS

- By David Lawrence

ILKESTON Town maintained a healthy seven-point lead at the top but it was a day to forget for all the clubs pushing for promotion, with none of the top six managing a win. The Robins had to settle for a share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw at Boldmere St Michaels but it had looked as though they would be heading back from Birmingham empty-handed. Harry Craven fired the Mikes into the lead midway through the first half and that was how it stayed until the 90th minute when substitute Deon Meikle scored with a close-range header. Walsall Wood remain second after they were also held to a 1-1 draw at Worcester City. Former Wolves striker Sylvan EbanksBlake gave the visitors an interval lead but this was cancelled out by George Forsyth. Sporting Khalsa were 1-0 winners at third-placed Westfields, a first-half Sean Williams effort lifted the visitors into the top six ahead of neighbours AFC Wulfrunains, who drew 1-1 with South Normanton Athletic. Fellow high-flyers Shepshed Dynamo were held to a goalless draw by the league’s FA Vase heroes Coventry United, while strugglers Romulus picked up three vital points following their 2-0 win at Stourport Swifts, where recent arrival Max Loveridge was among the goals. Wolverhampton Sporting Community remain rooted to the foot of the table after they slumped to a 6-2 defeat at Lye Town, where the in-form Jack Till led the way with an 18minute second-half hat-trick. Long Eaton United were also among the goals, coming from behind to see off visitors Quorn 3-1, and former Aston Villa frontman Stefan Moore was on target for Highgate United in their 2-0 defeat of Loughborough University.
