Moatsiders keep Towners at bay

- By Chris Pullen

MERSTHAM survived a second-half onslaught by Enfield Town as their impressive unbeaten run against the league’s top sides continued.

Enfield threatened from a number of set pieces early on and Merstham keeper Amadou Tangara made a fine stop to deny Matt Johnson.

Less than a minute later Merstham were in front. A good move found Kershaney Samuels on the right flank. His driven near post cross went straight into Joe Wright’s hands, but the keeper inexplicably fumbled and Walter Figueira pounced for the opener.

Enfield continued to look dangerous in the air and Mark Weatherstone headed just over from another corner.

But Merstham’s pace on the counter attack was always a threat, the first half ending with Wright palming a dipping Samuels free kick over the bar.

The second half was all Enfield. They dominated possession and territory, with Merstham finding it hard to get hold of the ball.

But a combination of wasteful finishing and some excellent defending by the Merstham back four meant that Tangara was rarely extended, with the visitors feeling they should have left with points to their name. STAR MAN: Kenny Beaney (Merstham) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
