LEGEND CLARK’S LIVING OUT HIS DREAM

- By Hugo Varley

GATESHEAD legend Ben Clark says it’s a dream come true to have been named manager at the International Stadium.

The former defender, who made over 250 appearances during a five-year stint with the Heed, was handed the reins this week following the sudden departure of Steve Watson to York City.

“It is an extremely proud moment because this club means so much to me,” Clark said.

“With the situation that the club was in you always have it at the back of your mind that it could happen and I’m so thankful to have been given the opportunity.

“It was something I always wanted to do; it has certainly come about a bit quicker than I was expecting but I’m absolutely relishing it.”

Former Newcastle and Everton defender Watson led the Heed towards the play-off positions before making the switch to Bootham Crescent, leaving Clark with a platform to build on.

“I have inherited a great squad with fantastic players and great attitudes and I think as a manager that is all that you can really ask for,” he added.

“You want players who are going to give it their all and I know we have got that here. Together as a group we can achieve something special.

“I know the players, I know what they are good at and how they can get better. They all know what I am about as well.

“There is nothing major I am going to change. I am my own man and have slightly different views on certain aspects of the game but the previous manager did a fantastic job.”

Clark’s new managerial team includes former Newcastle centre-back Mike Williamson, who will take on a player-coach role, and ex-Blyth Spartans defender Ian Watson, who has been named assistant manager.
