THE ROOKS ROAR BACK AS CRAIG HITS DOUBLE

- By James Boyes

A RESILIENT Lewes showed bags of character to come from two goals behind to beat a dogged Wingate & Finchley at the Dripping Pan.

The visitors took an unlikely lead in the 11th minute when Ahmet Rifat’s header squeezed under the dive of Lewes keeper Lewis Carey.

The goal knocked Lewes out of their stride and they struggled to impose themselves against their relegationfighting opponents.

The situation worsened for the Rooks in the 58th minute when Frankie Chappell turned in Ola Williams shot past his own keeper Carey.

A minute later, Chappell made amends when he got the last touch on James Hammond’s free kick which finally woke Lewes up.

Kieran Pamment hit the woodwork but it was two substitutions which helped turn the game for the Rooks.

Jonte Smith was on the pitch for four minutes before he drew the scores level with a penalty after Luke Blewden was felled by Sam Tring.

Callum Overton’s impact was even quicker, scoring with his first touch in the 82nd minute having been introduced only a minute earlier, bravely sliding in at the near post with keeper Shane Gore and two defenders.

Overton had the final say when he scored in the 95th minute to add gloss to the scoreline. STAR MAN: James Hammond (Lewes) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
